Steve, I totally agree with this concept. I remember those older students paying attention to me when I was little, and they always made me feel welcome and accepted. Even in high school, I continued to look up to the older classes, and having their acceptance actually did give me more self-confidence.
Although, I think what you really meant in this sentence: “I hear and read so often that children need mentors because so many of them are growing up with the support of a traditional mother-father household,” is actually that children are NOT growing up in a traditional household…many students now live in single-parent households, which explains why mentors are important to the children.
By the way, I don’t know if you’ll get this comment for your post “Hold the door,” but your blog would not allow me to post a comment for the blog itself. It said something like, “Comments option off,” or something along those lines….
